Custom moving boxes are corrugated shipping cartons made in the sizes and strengths needed to pack a home or office for relocation, printed with a company’s branding and handling information. Moving companies, storage operators and relocation services use them on jobs and sell them to customers. They ship flat and are taped into shape when needed.

Who Orders Custom Moving Boxes?

Mostly businesses that move things for a living or sell supplies to people who do. Van lines and local movers put their name and phone number on every carton. Self-storage facilities and truck rental counters sell boxes at the front desk. Corporate relocation teams, property managers, universities and real estate agents hand out branded moving boxes as a practical courtesy. A printed carton keeps working after the job: neighbors see it on moving day, and many boxes are passed on and reused.

Which Box Size Goes With Which Room?

Match the size of the box to the weight of what goes in it: the heavier the contents, the smaller the box. The industry’s standard sizes are described by volume.

Small, About 1.5 Cubic Feet

The book box, roughly 16 x 12 x 12 inches. Use it for books, files, canned food, tools and records. Home offices, kitchens and garages need the most of these.

Medium, About 3 Cubic Feet

The all-purpose carton, around 18 x 18 x 16 inches. It takes pots and pans, toys, small appliances, shoes and pantry goods, and every room uses a few.

Large, About 4.5 Cubic Feet

Around 18 x 18 x 24 inches, for lighter, bulkier items: lampshades, linens, clothing and kitchen storage containers. Living rooms and bedrooms fill most of them.

Extra Large, About 6 Cubic Feet

Around 24 x 18 x 24 inches, and strictly for light loads such as pillows, comforters and winter coats. Filled with heavy items it becomes a lifting hazard.

Those dimensions are typical, and we make custom sizes when your trucks, dollies or shelving call for something different.

As a planning guide, a household needs far more small and medium cartons than large ones. Books, dishes, pantry goods and tools add up quickly, while bulky soft goods compress. Movers who sell kits often bundle sizes by home type, such as a studio kit or a family home kit, and print the kit contents on the outer bundle wrap or on a label.

What About Wardrobes, Dishes and TVs?

Specialty cartons protect the items that standard boxes handle badly.

  • Wardrobe boxes: tall cartons with a hanging bar so clothes travel on their hangers.
  • Dish packs: double-wall cartons, often with cell dividers, for china, glassware and stemware.
  • Picture and mirror boxes: flat, telescoping cartons that adjust to the frame.
  • TV boxes: adjustable two-piece cartons for flat screens.
  • Lamp and golf boxes: tall, narrow cartons for long items.
  • File boxes: lidded cartons with hand holes for office moves.

Office relocations usually begin in the file room, so many movers add printed archive boxes to the same order.

How Strong Does a Moving Box Need to Be?

Strong enough to be stacked in a truck under several other full boxes. Corrugated strength is usually given as an Edge Crush Test (ECT) rating, which measures how much stacking load the board edge resists, or as a Mullen burst rating.

Single-wall board rated around 32 ECT is the everyday standard for small, medium and large household cartons. Heavy-duty single-wall, around 44 ECT, suits book boxes and anything headed for long-distance transport or storage. Double-wall board, typically 48 ECT and higher, is used for dish packs, electronics and wardrobe boxes.

Box style matters as well as board. Almost all moving cartons are regular slotted containers, where four flaps at the top and four at the bottom meet in the middle and are taped shut. It is the most economical style to produce, it ships flat, and crews can build one in seconds.

Stronger board also survives reuse. If your customers return boxes, or your crews reuse them across jobs, a heavier grade earns back its cost in the number of trips each carton makes. For freight outside the moving trade, our corrugated shipping boxes are specified the same way.

What Should You Print on a Moving Box?

Print what helps the crew and what promotes the company. Useful elements include:

  • Company name, logo, phone number and web address on at least two sides
  • A room checklist with tick boxes: kitchen, bedroom, bath, living room, office, garage
  • A contents line and a customer name field
  • Fragile, this-side-up and do-not-stack icons
  • The box size and a suggested maximum load
  • Packing tips or a short list of items movers cannot carry

Most moving cartons are printed in one or two PMS colors directly on kraft board, which is economical and easy to read. Full-color CMYK printing on a white outer liner is available when the box is also a retail product. Keep the design bold, because corrugated kraft softens fine detail.

Many movers complete the kit with custom printed tapes, which seal the carton and repeat the brand along every seam.

Packing Tips Worth Printing or Sharing

  1. Tape the bottom seam with at least two strips, and run one more across it.
  2. Put heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones.
  3. Fill every box to the top so it does not crush when stacked. Use paper to fill gaps.
  4. Wrap plates individually and stand them on edge, not flat.
  5. Label the side of the box, not the top, so it can be read in a stack.
  6. Keep each box light enough for one person to carry safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are custom moving boxes?

They are corrugated cartons made in moving-industry sizes and strengths and printed with your company’s branding, contact details and handling marks. Movers, storage facilities and relocation services use them on jobs and sell them to customers who pack for themselves.

What sizes do moving boxes come in?

Standard sizes are small at about 1.5 cubic feet, medium at 3, large at 4.5 and extra large at 6. Specialty cartons include wardrobe, dish pack, picture, TV and lamp boxes. We also make custom dimensions on request.

How many boxes does a typical home need?

It varies with the household, so movers usually estimate by room and by how much the family owns. A common approach is to supply more small and medium cartons than large ones, since heavy items such as books and dishes fill small boxes quickly.

What does ECT mean?

ECT stands for Edge Crush Test. It measures how much force a piece of corrugated board withstands on its edge, which indicates stacking strength. A higher number means a stronger box. Everyday moving cartons are commonly rated around 32 ECT.

When do I need double-wall boxes?

Use double-wall board for dish packs, fragile electronics, wardrobe boxes and anything going into long-term storage or long-distance transport. Two layers of fluting add stacking strength and puncture resistance, and the cartons stand up better to repeated use.

Can I print my logo on all four sides?

Yes. Most movers print at least two opposite panels so the brand shows however the box is stacked, and many print all four. Logos, phone numbers, room checklists and handling icons can be arranged across the panels as you prefer.

How many colors can you print?

One or two PMS colors on kraft is the most common choice for moving cartons, and it reads clearly at a distance. Full-color CMYK printing is also available, typically on a white outer liner, when you want a retail-quality look.

Can you add a room checklist and fragile symbols?

Yes. Room tick boxes, contents lines, fragile icons, arrows and stacking warnings are all standard requests. Our designers can add them to your layout at no charge, and you will see their position on the proof before printing.

Do wardrobe boxes include a hanging bar?

Wardrobe cartons are designed around a hanging bar that sits in notches at the top of the box. Tell us whether you want bars supplied with the cartons and which style you use, and we will confirm the details on your quote.

Are the boxes delivered flat?

Yes. Moving boxes ship flat in bundles, which keeps freight efficient and lets you store a large quantity in a small area. Crews fold the flaps and tape the bottom seam when a box is needed.

Can moving boxes be reused?

Good corrugated cartons can be reused several times if they stay dry and are not overloaded. Heavier board grades last through more moves. When a box is worn out, paper-based packaging is widely recyclable, though local rules vary.

Do you sell moving boxes wholesale?

Yes. We supply moving companies, storage operators and resellers with bulk quantities across a mix of sizes. Minimums are low, so smaller operators can order too. Send the sizes and volumes you need and we will prepare a quote.

How long does an order take?

The timeline depends on the number of sizes, quantity and print, and it is confirmed on your quote. Production starts after proof approval. If you are stocking up for the busy summer moving season, get in touch early.

What artwork do you need from me?

Send your logo and any text as PDF, AI or EPS at 300 DPI in CMYK, with PMS references if you have brand colors. Vector files work best on corrugated. Free design support is available to prepare the layout.

Is shipping included?

Shipping is free, and your quote will confirm delivery details for your location, including how the boxes will be bundled. Let us know if you have a loading dock or need delivery to more than one branch.
