Cannabis boxes are printed cartons and rigid boxes used as outer packaging for cannabis products, including flower jars, pre-rolls, vape cartridges, edibles and topicals. They protect the primary container, present the brand in a dispensary and carry the product information and warnings the seller must display. Most are paperboard folding cartons made to fit one container or one pack count.

What Do Brands and Dispensaries Pack in Cannabis Boxes?

Nearly every product category in a dispensary uses a carton of some kind, though the structures differ a good deal.

  • Flower: glass or tin jars in a square tuck carton, or pouches inside a carton for a firmer shelf face. Some brands sell flower directly in printed mylar bags and reserve cartons for premium lines.
  • Pre-rolls: single tubes in slim cartons, and multi-packs in hinged-lid or slide boxes.
  • Cartridges: small cartons with an insert, often with a hang tab.
  • Edibles: sleeves, slide boxes and tuck cartons around a wrapped or pouched product.
  • Tinctures and topicals: tall bottle cartons and squat jar cartons.
  • Gift and sampler sets: rigid boxes with a tray that holds several products.

Pre-Roll Packs: The Format That Needs the Most Thought

Pre-rolls are fragile, tapered and sold in several lengths, so their packs need more engineering than a jar carton. There are three common approaches.

A hinged-lid pack, built like a traditional cigarette pack, holds five to ten pre-rolls upright and recloses after each use. A slide box holds them lying flat in a tray, usually in a paperboard insert with a slot for each one so the cones do not roll or crush each other. Single pre-rolls are normally sold in a tube, which then goes into a slim carton or straight onto a display, and our cardboard tube packaging is a paper-based option for that tube.

Measure the pre-roll at its full length, including the filter tip, and at its widest diameter. A slot should hold the cone gently along its length without pinching the narrow end.

How Do You Box a Flower Jar?

Use a square carton cut to the jar’s diameter and height, with an auto-lock bottom if the jar is glass. Glass jars are heavy for their size, and a plain tuck base can open under the weight when a customer lifts the carton by its sides.

A window is optional. It shows the jar and its label, though many brands prefer a fully closed carton that hides the contents from view. If the jar carries a tamper band or a tall lid, include it in the height. For jars sold in more than one size, keep the artwork layout identical and change only the dimensions and the net quantity.

Why Leave Blank Space on a Printed Box?

Because part of the information on a cannabis pack changes with every batch and cannot be printed in advance. Batch numbers, harvest or packing dates, test figures and tracking identifiers are usually printed on a label at packing and applied to the carton.

Plan a dedicated label zone on the dieline, sized to the label you use, and keep foil, embossing and spot UV out of it so the label lies flat. A thin printed outline or a tinted panel shows packing staff exactly where the label goes. Matching labels and stickers can be printed with your branding and a blank area for the variable data. The same idea works for seal labels across the opening flap.

Running State Versions of One Design

Brands that sell in more than one state often need a different version of each carton for each market, with different warning text, symbols or panel positions. The practical way to manage this is to hold the structure constant and treat the regulated content as a layer that changes.

Keep one dieline

Use the same carton size and style everywhere, so inserts, display trays and shipping cases stay the same.

Reserve the largest required space

Find the market with the most demanding panel requirements and lay out every version to that allowance. Other versions then have room to spare and do not need a redesign.

Name versions clearly

Put the state and revision in every file name and check each version’s proof separately.

Whichever markets you serve, you are responsible for making sure your labeling and any child-resistant packaging meet the regulations there. Boxify Now prints the content you approve.

Materials, Printing and Finishes

SBS paperboard is the standard for cannabis boxes, with kraft paperboard for a natural look and rigid chipboard for gift sets. All are opaque. E-flute corrugated is used for shipping trays and mailers.

Printing is CMYK and PMS, outside and inside. PMS inks are useful for color-coding product types across a range. Finishes include matte or gloss lamination, soft-touch, aqueous coating, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing. Matte or soft-touch with a single foil or spot UV accent is a common choice, and it keeps the design measured and adult in tone.

Can Cannabis Boxes Go Straight Onto the Counter?

Yes, with a display tray made to match. Small cartons for cartridges and pre-rolls are easy to lose in a case, and a printed counter display box holds a set number upright with the fronts visible. Because many dispensaries keep stock in locked cases or behind the counter, the front and top faces of the carton matter most. Put the brand and product type on both.

A Checklist Before You Request a Quote

  • Dimensions of the container, or the count and size of pre-rolls.
  • Box style, and whether you need an insert or dividers.
  • Quantity, and the number of artwork versions.
  • The size of any label zone you need left clear.
  • Finishes you are considering.
  • Artwork as PDF, AI or EPS at 300 DPI in CMYK, if it is ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

What products are cannabis boxes used for?

Flower jars, pre-roll singles and multi-packs, vape cartridges, edibles, tinctures, topicals and gift sets. Each has its own structure, from square jar cartons to hinged-lid pre-roll packs, and all are made to the dimensions of your container.

What is the best box for a pack of pre-rolls?

A hinged-lid pack holds pre-rolls upright and recloses, which suits packs used over several days. A slide box with a slotted insert holds them flat and protects the cones better. The choice depends on count, length and how you want the pack to open.

How do I measure pre-rolls for a box?

Measure the full length including the filter tip and the diameter at the widest end. Tell us how many go in the pack and whether they stand upright or lie flat. The insert slots and box size are worked out from those figures.

Why should I leave a blank area on the carton?

Batch numbers, dates and similar details change with every run, so they are normally added on a label at packing. A marked zone on the carton, free of decorative finishes, gives that label a consistent position and a flat surface.

Can I get different versions for different states?

Yes. Use one box size and structure and supply a separate artwork file for each state. List the versions and the quantity of each in your quote request, and check each version’s proof separately for its specific wording.

Are your cannabis boxes child-resistant?

We do not claim a child-resistance rating for our boxes. Many producers use a child-resistant jar, tube or pouch as the primary container and a carton as the outer pack. If you need a particular locking structure, send the details and we will advise.

Can the boxes be fully opaque?

Yes. Paperboard, kraft and rigid chipboard are all opaque, and a carton without a window hides the contents completely. Printing the inside in a solid color is an option if you want the interior to look finished as well.

Which board should I choose?

SBS paperboard for most retail cartons, because it prints detail and small text cleanly. Kraft paperboard for a natural, craft appearance. Rigid chipboard for gift and sampler sets. For glass jars, choose a heavier board and an auto-lock bottom.

What finishes are available?

Matte or gloss lamination, soft-touch, aqueous coating, spot UV, foil stamping, embossing and debossing. Keep decorative finishes away from label zones, barcodes and small required text, where a flat, plain surface works best.

Do you make inserts for cartridges and jars?

Yes. Custom inserts are cut to hold a cartridge by its body, center a jar in a larger carton or separate several items in a set. Paperboard is the usual material, with foam available for heavier glass.

Can I color-code product types?

Yes. A fixed layout with one PMS color per product type or category is an effective system. Spot inks stay consistent from run to run, so shoppers and staff can rely on the color to identify a product at a glance.

What is the minimum order?

Minimums are low, which helps small producers and limited releases. The quantities available for your style, size and number of versions are set out on your quote before you commit to anything.

How long does an order take?

The timeline is confirmed on your quote and varies with the structure, finishes and quantity. Orders with several state versions move fastest when all artwork is final and approved together, not sent one version at a time.

Is shipping free?

Yes, shipping is free, and your quote will confirm delivery details for your location. Folding cartons ship flat where the style allows and are set up at your facility when you pack.

What do I need to send for artwork and proofing?

Artwork as PDF, AI or EPS at 300 DPI in CMYK, or your logo and text if you want free design support. You then receive a digital proof and 3D mockup to approve before production begins.
